Description

Heteropeza is a genus of small dipteran insects belonging to the Cecidomyiidae family, commonly known as gall midges. These insects are significant pests in professional mushroom cultivation, where they infest both the mycelium and the fruiting bodies of the fungi.

The primary crop damaged by this pest is the common button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus). The larvae feed directly on the mushroom mycelium, leading to a marked decrease in yield and significant degradation of the mushroom's quality for market standards.

The biology of Heteropeza is notable for its ability to undergo paedogenesis, a reproductive mode where larvae can produce offspring without reaching the adult stage. This allows for extremely rapid population growth, especially within the controlled, stable environment of indoor mushroom production facilities.

The damage is characterized by the localized death of the mycelium and the appearance of pits or lesions on the mushroom stems and caps. A severe infestation can lead to total crop failure, as the larvae rapidly disperse throughout the substrate and deplete its nutritional content.

Effective management of Heteropeza requires an integrated approach, including strict facility hygiene, regular disinfection, and precise environmental control. Chemical treatments are challenging due to the short life cycle of the pest and the requirement to strictly limit pesticide residues on the final harvest.
