The grape thrips (scientific name Heterothrips vitis) is a small insect belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Heterothripidae. It is recognized as a specialized herbivore that targets grapevines, often causing localized outbreaks that negatively affect viticultural productivity.

This pest primarily feeds on tissues of Vitis species. It targets young foliage, developing flower clusters, and young berries. By piercing the plant cells and sucking out the sap, the insect disrupts the normal physiological development of the vine, often leading to reduced berry size and lower fruit quality.

The biological cycle of Heterothrips vitis consists of several stages: egg, larva, propupa, pupa, and adult. The development rate is highly sensitive to ambient temperature and microclimate conditions. In warmer climates, the insect can complete multiple generations per season, resulting in exponential population growth if left unmanaged.

Damage caused by this thrips species manifests as chlorotic spots, silvering of the leaf surface, and crinkling of leaves. When floral parts are attacked, it often results in the abscission of blossoms, leading to significant yield loss. Furthermore, the lesions created by feeding provide entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungal infections.
