The rice grasshopper (Hieroglyphus banian) is a significant pest species belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. This insect is primarily recognized as a major threat to rice cultivation across the Asian continent, often reaching outbreak levels that lead to severe economic losses for agricultural producers.
While rice is its preferred host, the species is polyphagous and can thrive on various crops including sugarcane, sorghum, maize, and pearl millet. Its ability to adapt to diverse grass-like environments makes it a resilient pest, especially in areas where traditional irrigation methods are practiced.
