Rice grasshopper

Hieroglyphus concolor

Description

Hieroglyphus concolor, commonly known as the rice grasshopper, is an insect pest classified within the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. This species is a significant threat to agriculture, primarily thriving in tropical and subtropical regions where rice cultivation is the dominant economic activity.

The primary host plant for this species is cultivated rice (Oryza sativa). However, the insect is polyphagous to a degree and can also infest various wild grasses and sugarcane crops. These secondary hosts often serve as bridges for the pest population between planting seasons, making total eradication difficult.

The lifecycle of Hieroglyphus concolor consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. The female deposits eggs into the soil, typically at the end of the cropping season. These eggs remain dormant in the soil through unfavorable conditions until seasonal rains trigger hatching. Nymphs then undergo several molts, feeding voraciously throughout the rice growing stages.

Damage caused by this grasshopper is characterized by severe defoliation. Nymphs and adults feed on leaf blades, leaving ragged edges or consuming them entirely. This damage significantly impairs the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis, which stunts growth and leads to substantial yield reductions, affecting both grain quality and quantity.

Control and management strategies should be integrated to minimize crop losses:

  • Mechanical destruction of egg pods through deep soil plowing during the fallow period.
  • Monitoring the field early in the season to identify and treat nymph hotspots before they spread.
  • Application of selective insecticides to target younger nymphal stages when they are most vulnerable.
  • Maintenance of field hygiene to remove wild host grasses that serve as alternative food sources for the pests.
