Description
The rice grasshopper (Hieroglyphus oryzivorus) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. This species is widely recognized in agronomy for its specific preference for rice crops, making it a significant challenge for farmers in affected cultivation areas.
While rice is the primary host for Hieroglyphus oryzivorus, the pest is also known to consume various wild grasses and alternative cereal crops such as maize or sorghum when its main food source is unavailable or depleted due to overpopulation.
The life cycle of the rice grasshopper is closely synchronized with the cropping season. Eggs are deposited in the soil, where they overwinter to survive adverse conditions. Once temperatures rise and rainfall increases, the nymphs emerge and begin feeding on young rice shoots, progressing through several instars before reaching the adult stage.
