Hippiscus

Systematic position. Hippiscus (lat. Hippiscus) belongs to the order Orthoptera, family Acrididae. These insects are a type of band-winged grasshopper, known for their agility and ability to thrive in grassland and open prairie environments, sometimes reaching population densities that become economically significant.

Host crops. This pest is a generalist feeder with a preference for various grasses. It affects a wide range of agricultural crops, including small grains (wheat, barley, oats), corn, and various forage grasses. In years with significant droughts, they can cause widespread damage to pastures and crop fields due to the scarcity of natural wild grasses.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of three developmental stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Eggs are typically laid in soil clusters, often referred to as egg pods, where they remain dormant throughout the winter. Nymphs emerge in the spring as the soil warms up. They undergo several molts through different instar stages until they reach the adult form capable of flight and reproduction.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. Hippiscus has chewing mouthparts that allow it to consume large quantities of plant tissue. They primarily feed on foliage, but during outbreaks, they can defoliate entire plants, including stalks and reproductive structures. This herbivory significantly weakens the plant, reduces the leaf surface area for photosynthesis, and leads to yield losses or, in severe cases, complete crop failure.

Protection measures. Managing Hippiscus requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on long-term prevention and immediate control:

• Tillage practices such as deep plowing to destroy egg pods deposited in the soil.
• Management of weeds and crop borders to reduce preferred breeding habitats.
• Application of selective insecticides when nymph populations exceed economic thresholds.
• Regular field scouting to identify infestation hotspots and prevent the spread of mature insects.
