Description
Systematic position. The genus Hishimonus belongs to the order Hemiptera, suborder Cicadomorpha, and the family Cicadellidae. These insects are classified as leafhoppers and are recognized as significant pests in various agricultural systems due to their feeding habits and their role as vectors for phytoplasmas.
Host plants. These pests affect a wide range of woody and herbaceous plants. Notable hosts include grapevines, citrus trees, and various vegetable crops such as eggplants. Because they can thrive on many alternative host plants, including weeds and surrounding hedges, they are often difficult to eradicate completely from an area.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The insects typically reproduce during the warmer months. Both nymphs and adults are highly mobile and feed on plant sap by piercing the tissues. High temperatures accelerate their reproductive cycles, allowing for multiple generations per season in suitable climates.
Nature of damage and pest status. The damage caused by Hishimonus is twofold. Direct damage occurs through the extraction of sap, leading to wilting, yellowing, and stunted growth. Indirect damage is often more severe, as the leafhoppers act as vectors for various plant diseases, causing systemic infections that can lead to the decline and death of the plant.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial. Key strategies include the removal of infected plant material and the elimination of weeds that serve as alternative hosts. Chemical control involves the application of systemic insecticides during the peak of the nymph stage. The use of sticky yellow traps is recommended to monitor populations and determine the optimal timing for spray applications.
