Description

Hishimonus phycitis is a species of leafhopper belonging to the family Cicadellidae, order Hemiptera. It is widely recognized in agricultural research as a significant pest, primarily due to its role as an efficient vector for phytoplasma-associated diseases, such as the little leaf disease that severely impacts various solanaceous crops.

The host range of Hishimonus phycitis is extensive, with a strong preference for eggplant (Solanum melongena). However, it is also known to colonize various other wild and cultivated plant species, allowing the population to persist and migrate between fields throughout the growing season.

The biological cycle of this insect involves egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Both nymphs and adults are sap-suckers, utilizing specialized piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the phloem of host plants. The rate of development is highly dependent on ambient temperature, facilitating multiple generations per year in tropical and subtropical climates.
