Holoparamecus is a genus of tiny beetles belonging to the family Latridiidae, commonly known as minute brown scavenger beetles. These insects are exceptionally small, often measuring less than 1.5 mm, which allows them to hide in cracks and crevices within storage facilities, making them difficult to detect until an infestation becomes severe.
Biologically, Holoparamecus beetles are classified within the order Coleoptera. Unlike primary grain pests that bore into healthy seeds, these beetles are primarily mycophagous. This means they feed extensively on molds and fungi that develop on grain, flour, and other stored products when storage conditions are damp or poorly ventilated.
The primary commodities affected include cereal grains, processed flour, dry vegetable matter, and various organic materials stored in warehouses. While they do not consume the grain directly as their main diet, their presence is a clear indicator that the stored material is damp and actively decaying due to fungal growth.
