Lucerne seed weevil

The lucerne seed weevil (Holotrichapion pisi) belongs to the family Apionidae (order Coleoptera). It is a significant pest of alfalfa and various leguminous crops, recognized by agronomists as a primary threat to seed production, as the larvae feed specifically on the developing seeds inside the pods.

The adult insect is a small beetle, typically 2–3 mm in length, characterized by a distinct, elongated rostrum. Their dark coloration makes them inconspicuous on the host plants. Despite their small size, high population densities can lead to total destruction of the seed yield if left unmanaged.

The life cycle is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. The adults overwinter in sheltered locations, such as debris, hedge rows, or the topsoil. In the spring, they emerge to feed on tender vegetative parts before transitioning to the reproductive phase of the crop, where mating and oviposition occur.

The damage caused by Holotrichapion is essentially internal. The female weevil lays eggs directly into the developing pods or ovaries. Upon hatching, the larvae consume the developing seeds, effectively hollowing them out. This prevents seed germination and significantly reduces the total weight and economic value of the harvested seed lot.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control this pest. Key strategies include:

• Maintaining isolation distances between newly planted and established alfalfa fields.
• Timely harvesting to remove seeds before the next generation of larvae fully develops.
• Application of selective systemic insecticides during the pre-flowering stage based on economic threshold levels.

Proper field scouting is crucial for effective management. Agronomists should monitor the edges of fields in early spring to detect the arrival of overwintering adults. By interrupting the life cycle before the egg-laying phase, producers can prevent significant economic damage and maintain the vitality of their seed crops.
