Mimosa webworm

Homadaula

Description

Systematic position of the Homadaula genus places it within the family Galacticidae, order Lepidoptera. The most economically significant species is Homadaula anisocentra, commonly known as the Mimosa webworm, which has become a persistent pest in various urban and forest ecosystems where its host plants are present.

Host plants primarily include species of the Albizia and Gleditsia genera. In landscape settings, the Mimosa tree (Albizia julibrissin) and the Honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos) are the most susceptible. These trees are highly valued for their ornamental appearance, making the damage caused by these insects particularly noticeable and unwanted.

Biology and life cycle typically involve multiple generations per year, depending on the climate. The insect overwinters as a pupa within silken cocoons located in protective crevices or debris. In the spring, adult moths emerge to mate and lay eggs on the leaves of host trees. Larvae hatch and begin constructing communal webs that serve as both a food source and a shelter.

Damage and pest status are characterized by skeletonized leaves and webbing. The larvae feed on the leaf tissues inside the webbed clusters, causing the foliage to turn brown and die prematurely. Heavy infestations can lead to complete defoliation of the canopy, which weakens the host tree, stresses its physiological systems, and may increase its susceptibility to secondary diseases or wood-boring insects.

Control measures require early detection and an integrated approach. Management strategies include:

  • Regular monitoring of host trees for the initial appearance of webs.
  • Hand-pruning and destroying infested leaf clusters early in the season.
  • Application of systemic insecticides or contact sprays targeting young larvae.
  • Use of biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), which targets caterpillars while preserving beneficial insects.
  • Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation to help plants recover from stress.
