Glassy-winged sharpshooter

Homalodisca vitripennis

Description

Systematic position: The Glassy-winged sharpshooter (Homalodisca vitripennis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a highly significant invasive insect species, recognized globally for its ability to transmit devastating bacterial diseases across diverse agricultural ecosystems.

Host range: This pest is extremely polyphagous, feeding on over 100 different plant species. Primary agricultural hosts include grapevines, citrus trees, almonds, peaches, and various stone fruits. It also thrives on numerous landscape ornamentals and native tree species such as oaks, elms, and maples.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes hemimetabolous development consisting of egg, five nymphal instars, and adult stages. Females insert eggs into the leaf tissue, often covering them with a characteristic white secretion. Depending on climatic conditions, the sharpshooter can complete several generations per year, making rapid population growth a major concern for growers.

Damage and pest status: The primary damage is caused by feeding on plant xylem fluid, which can dehydrate and stress the host. However, its most severe economic impact stems from its role as a vector for Xylella fastidiosa. This bacterium causes Pierce’s disease in grapevines and other lethal conditions in various trees, leading to total crop failure.

  • Systemic insecticide treatments applied to soil or foliage.
  • Deployment of sticky traps and yellow cards for adult monitoring.
  • Biological control through the release of egg parasitoids like Gonatocerus species.
  • Implementation of regional quarantine measures to prevent the spread of infested nursery stock.
  • Cultural management, including the removal of preferred host plants near vineyard borders.
