Litchi mealybug

Hordeolicoccus nephelii is a specific species of mealybug categorized within the family Pseudococcidae and the order Hemiptera. This pest is a major threat to litchi plantations (Litchi chinensis) and other related tropical fruit trees. Due to its feeding habits, it can significantly affect both plant health and fruit harvest quality.

The damage caused by these mealybugs is extensive, as they feed on the sap of young shoots, leaves, and developing fruit. This extraction of nutrients leads to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and the shedding of flowers and young fruits. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and interferes with essential plant photosynthesis processes.

Regarding their biology, the development of Hordeolicoccus nephelii is continuous in warm climates. Females produce white, waxy ovisacs where they lay their eggs, providing protection from harsh environmental conditions. The mobile nymphs, or "crawlers," are the primary stage for dispersal, moving from one part of the canopy to another or being transported by human activity and wind.

Identifying this pest in the field involves looking for distinct white, cotton-like masses concentrated in protected areas such as leaf axils, stems, and beneath fruit scales. The presence of ants is often a secondary indicator of infestation, as they are attracted to the honeydew produced by the mealybugs, sometimes actively protecting the pests from natural predators.

Effective management strategies include:

• Regular field scouting to detect initial populations early in the season.
• Pruning and pruning disposal to remove heavily infested branches and clusters.
• The application of systemic insecticides that target sucking pests effectively.
• Utilizing horticultural oils or soaps to soften the waxy shield of the mealybug.
• Encouraging the presence of biological control agents, such as predatory beetles and parasitoid wasps.
