Description

Horidiplosis is a genus of insects belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae, within the order Diptera. These minute pests are specialized plant-feeders known for inducing the formation of characteristic galls on the leaves of specific ornamental plants, most notably the Ficus species.

The primary host plant affected by this pest is Ficus benjamina (weeping fig). The larvae of the midge initiate the formation of galls by feeding on the leaf tissue, which forces the plant to create abnormal growth surrounding the developing larvae, providing them with both food and protection.

The biology of Horidiplosis is inextricably linked to the developmental stages of the host plant. Adult females oviposit into the soft tissues of young, expanding leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae secrete enzymes that disrupt normal leaf physiology, resulting in the formation of typical gall structures that serve as their primary habitat.

The damage caused is primarily cosmetic but can be severe in high-density infestations. Symptoms include:

  • Distinctive small, round swellings (galls) on the undersides of leaves.
  • Yellowing of the foliage.
  • Premature leaf drop.
  • Stunted shoot growth and loss of plant vigor.

Management strategies focus on integrated control: physical removal and destruction of infested leaves are critical to reduce the population. Systemic insecticides can be effective if applied during the early stages of infestation. Maintaining optimal plant health through proper watering and light exposure helps the plant tolerate pest pressure and prevents outbreaks.
