Horidiplosis ficifolii is a small insect species within the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is recognized as a significant pest specifically targeting the foliage of fig trees (Ficus carica). This species is known for inducing the formation of characteristic galls on the leaves of its host plant.

The primary host for this pest is the common fig. The larvae feed on the internal tissues of developing leaves, which triggers the plant to develop abnormal cell growth in the form of galls. These galls provide both nourishment and protection for the developing larvae, making them difficult to reach with standard surface treatments.

The life cycle of the fig leaf gall midge is closely synchronized with the growth phases of the fig tree. After mating, adult females oviposit on young, expanding leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the leaf tissue, which initiates the gall formation process. Depending on the climate, the pest can complete several generations throughout the growing season.

Damage symptoms manifest as small, rounded, often yellowish or brownish protrusions on the leaf surface. High infestations lead to leaf distortion, chlorosis, and premature senescence. The resulting loss of photosynthetic area severely weakens the plant, limits shoot growth, and reduces the quality and quantity of the fruit crop.
