Honeysuckle aphid

The honeysuckle aphid (lat. Hyadaphis bicincta) is a specialized pest belonging to the order Hemiptera, family Aphididae. It is primarily known for its association with plants of the genus Lonicera (honeysuckle), which serve as the primary host plants for colony development throughout the active growing season.

The biology of this species is marked by a complex life cycle typical of many aphids, involving both asexual and sexual reproduction phases. During the summer, populations consist mainly of wingless and winged females that multiply rapidly, allowing the species to quickly colonize new shoots and dominate the host plant under favorable climatic conditions.

The symptoms of infestation are characterized by the deformation of young leaves and tender shoot tips. By piercing the plant tissue and sucking out the sap, the aphids cause leaves to curl, yellow, and eventually drop off prematurely. This stunting of the growth points significantly reduces the overall aesthetic and physiological vigor of the honeysuckle shrubs.

The economic impact of the honeysuckle aphid goes beyond direct feeding damage. The secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage in a dark film and inhibits photosynthesis.
