Description

The Tatarian honeysuckle aphid (Hyadaphis tataricae) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Aphididae family. It is widely recognized as the primary cause of damage to Lonicera tatarica and related honeysuckle species, often leading to severe aesthetic and structural degradation of ornamental landscape plants.

This aphid species is host-specific, primarily infesting various honeysuckle varieties. The pest typically targets the succulent tissues of terminal buds and young leaves, where it thrives by consuming phloem sap, which deprives the plant of essential nutrients and disrupts normal development.

The life cycle involves overwintering as eggs on the bark of twigs. Upon bud break in spring, nymphs emerge and initiate feeding. As temperatures rise, the aphid undergoes several generations, quickly expanding the colony size and intensifying the damage during the peak of the growing season.

The characteristic damage is the formation of tight, deformed clusters of foliage known as "witches' brooms." These stunted, curled leaves provide protection for the aphids while rendering chemical contact treatments difficult. Prolonged infestation results in reduced shoot elongation, stunted growth, and increased susceptibility to winter damage.
