Description

The emerald mirid bug (Hyalopeplus smaragdinus) belongs to the family Miridae within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a significant pest, particularly impacting agricultural output in tropical regions where high-value crops are cultivated in dense environments.

The primary host for this insect is the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao). The bugs feed on the sap of young, developing plant tissues. While they are specialists on cocoa, they are often found on secondary host plants, including various broadleaf weeds, which helps the population persist even when the main crop is not actively growing.

The lifecycle of Hyalopeplus smaragdinus consists of an egg stage, several nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid inside the tender plant parts, such as terminal buds or fruit peduncles. This protection makes the egg stage difficult to target with contact insecticides, necessitating precise timing for chemical control measures.
