The almond aphid (Hyalopterus amygdali) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Aphididae family. It is recognized as a serious pest that specifically targets stone fruit trees. This insect is highly adapted to its host environment, often reaching high population densities during favorable weather conditions in spring and early summer.
This pest primarily damages almond, peach, and apricot trees. By feeding on the phloem sap of leaves and young succulent shoots, the aphid disrupts the normal physiological processes of the tree. The impact is most severe on young nursery stock and mature trees undergoing active vegetative growth.
The biology of Hyalopterus amygdali involves wintering as eggs, which are deposited on the bark of twigs. As temperatures rise in the spring, the eggs hatch into fundatrices. These initial insects start feeding and reproducing rapidly, producing subsequent generations that may include winged forms capable of migrating between branches or different trees within the orchard.
The damage caused by the almond aphid is characterized by the curling and yellowing of foliage. As the aphids excrete honeydew, a sticky substance covers the leaf surface, which subsequently promotes the growth of sooty mold.
