Description
The cereal gall midge (Hybolasioptera cerealis) is a significant pest of cereal crops, belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. This tiny insect causes severe damage during its larval stage by colonizing the stems of host plants, leading to substantial economic losses in agriculture.
Primary hosts for this pest include wheat (both winter and spring varieties) and various other cereal grains. The midge is particularly problematic in areas where crop rotation is neglected, as this facilitates the accumulation of larval populations within the soil and stubble of previous harvests.
The life cycle of this species consists of a single generation per year. Larvae overwinter in the soil or within crop residues. In the spring, with the arrival of warm weather, pupation occurs, followed by the emergence of adults. Females deposit eggs under the leaf sheaths of young cereal stems, where the larvae develop upon hatching.
Damage is characterized by the formation of galls (swollen tissue) on the stems where larvae feed. Consequently, stems become weak and prone to lodging, leading to stunted grain development and significant yield reduction.
