Brown hydra (Hydra oligactis) is a member of the phylum Cnidaria, class Hydrozoa, and family Hydridae. In professional agricultural settings, specifically in aquaponics and fish hatcheries, this organism is considered a significant pest that disrupts biological production by preying on beneficial organisms and affecting aquatic plant health.
The organism consists of a small, tube-shaped body with a ring of tentacles equipped with nematocysts (stinging cells). It is a sedentary predator that attaches itself to substrates, including the root systems of various aquatic plants, using a basal disc. Its ability to regenerate lost body parts makes it exceptionally resilient to manual removal attempts.
The life cycle of the brown hydra includes both asexual and sexual stages. Under favorable conditions, it reproduces rapidly by budding, creating dense clusters that can cover plant roots. When conditions become harsh, such as during temperature drops or food scarcity, the hydra produces resistant cysts, allowing the population to persist in the system despite cleanings.
The primary damage caused by Hydra oligactis is predation. The toxins released by its stinging cells can paralyze and kill young fish larvae and beneficial zooplankton. In aquaponic systems, the presence of these hydras on plant roots interferes with nutrient uptake and physical growth, leading to reduced yield and poor overall plant vigor.
Effective management requires a multi-pronged approach. Operators should ensure regular cleaning of reservoir walls and pipes to remove fixed polyps. Biological control using natural predators of hydra can be effective. Additionally, maintaining precise water quality parameters is crucial to prevent the population explosions that characterize this species in artificial environments.
