Hydractinia (genus Hydractinia) are colonial hydroid polyps belonging to the family Hydractiniidae and the order Anthomedusae. Within the scope of specialized marine agriculture and aquaculture, they are recognized as biofouling organisms that can negatively impact the cultivation of marine plants, seaweed, and shellfish in coastal farming systems.
The biological cycle of Hydractinia involves a sedentary colonial phase and a free-swimming larval stage known as planula. These organisms exhibit high colonization potential, rapidly spreading across available hard substrates in the marine environment. This ability makes them a significant management challenge for offshore and coastal farming operations where space and infrastructure are limited.
The primary economic damage caused by Hydractinia is through intensive biofouling of culture structures, ropes, and the organisms themselves.
