The potato stem borer (Hydraecia micacea) is a moth belonging to the Noctuidae family. Despite its common name, it is a polyphagous pest that affects a wide variety of plants, making it a significant challenge for farmers and gardeners across Europe and parts of North America.
The pest attacks a range of crops, including potatoes, hops, rhubarb, tomatoes, and corn, as well as various perennial grasses. The larvae (caterpillars) are the damaging stage of this insect, as they bore into the stems or crowns of the plants to feed on the internal tissues.
The life cycle of Hydraecia micacea typically involves one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, which are deposited on the soil or nearby weeds. Larvae hatch in the spring and initially feed on wild grasses before migrating to thicker-stemmed crops as they mature during the summer.
The damage caused by the potato stem borer includes wilting and terminal growth death of the infested plants. Because the larvae feed inside the stem, the plant's vascular system is disrupted, leading to stunted growth or total collapse. In severe cases, the damage leads to secondary decay caused by bacteria or fungi.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Cultural controls such as destroying weeds (especially quackgrass) around fields and practicing crop rotation significantly reduce populations. Chemical control is limited by the larvae's internal feeding habit, so timing the application of insecticides to coincide with the brief period before they enter the stem is crucial.
