The rice leaf miner Hydrellia philippina is a significant pest belonging to the family Ephydridae (shore flies). It is widely recognized in rice-growing regions for its ability to devastate young crops, causing substantial economic losses if not managed correctly.

The primary host for this insect is the rice plant (Oryza sativa). It specifically attacks the leaves of seedlings and young plants, as these tissues provide the necessary moisture and nutrients for the larvae to complete their development into the next life stage.
