Description

Systematic position. Hydrotaea is a genus of insects belonging to the order Diptera and the family Muscidae. These flies are widely recognized for their diverse ecological roles, ranging from saprophagous behavior in organic waste to causing significant harm to agricultural and horticultural crops during their larval stage.

Crops and damage profile. The pest is particularly problematic in greenhouses and vegetable cultivation. Larvae typically target germinating seeds, roots, and the underground parts of stems. This feeding behavior leads to plant stress, wilting, and, in severe infestations, complete failure of the crop stands.

  • proper soil management and deep plowing to disturb pupal habitats;
  • avoiding the use of undecomposed organic fertilizers;
  • maintaining optimal irrigation to prevent excessive soil moisture;
  • the application of registered insecticides when larval population thresholds are exceeded.
