Seedcorn maggot

Hylemya

Description

The seedcorn maggot (Hylemya platura) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Anthomyiidae family within the order Diptera. It is globally recognized as a primary threat to early-season crop establishment, as it can cause extensive damage to germinating seeds before they emerge from the soil.

This pest is highly polyphagous, attacking a wide array of crops including corn, soybeans, beans, peas, cucurbits, and various cruciferous vegetables. The larvae, which are the destructive stage of the insect, feed on the endosperm and the embryo of the seed, often leading to total crop failure in heavily infested areas.

The life cycle of the seedcorn maggot is closely linked to soil moisture and temperature. Adults emerge in early spring from puparia that have overwintered in the soil. Female flies are strongly attracted to decaying organic matter, which explains why fields recently treated with fresh manure or those with high crop residue levels are significantly more susceptible to infestation.

The damage caused by the larvae is most severe during cool, wet springs. Because slow germination gives the larvae more time to feed on the seeds and young shoots, the plant population can be drastically reduced. Damaged seedlings that do survive often show stunted growth, distorted foliage, and reduced yields due to the compromised root and stem systems.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for mitigation:

  • Wait for soil conditions that promote rapid seed germination and emergence.
  • Ensure thorough incorporation of green manures well in advance of planting.
  • Use systemic insecticidal seed treatments to protect the vulnerable germinating stage.
  • Avoid planting in fields with high levels of decomposing organic matter.
  • Monitor adult fly activity using sticky traps to determine if emergency insecticide applications are necessary.
