Hymeniacidon is a genus of marine sponges within the class Demospongiae, frequently identified as a significant fouling pest in aquaculture environments. While sponges are essential for marine ecosystems, their proliferation on farming structures poses a technical and economic threat to the cultivation of bivalve mollusks.

Systematically, this genus belongs to the order Suberitida and the family Hymeniacidonidae. These organisms are sessile, meaning they anchor themselves to hard surfaces. In farming operations, they capitalize on artificial substrates, including suspended ropes, cages, and the shells of live oysters or mussels, to establish their colonies.

The biology of the genus Hymeniacidon is characterized by high plasticity and efficient reproductive strategies. They can propagate through both sexual reproduction via planktonic larvae and vegetative fragmentation. Once a surface is occupied, the sponge grows rapidly, forming thick, encrusting mats that thrive in nutrient-rich waters often associated with dense aquaculture sites.

The economic damage caused by these sponges is primarily related to physical obstruction. By overgrowing the shells of mollusks, the sponge restricts the ability of the host to open and close its valves effectively. This leads to reduced feeding efficiency, stunted growth, weakened immunity, and increased mortality rates among the stock, significantly reducing commercial value.
