Currant-lettuce aphid
Hyperomyzella
Description
The currant-lettuce aphid (Hyperomyzella) is a destructive species of aphid belonging to the Aphididae family within the order Hemiptera. This pest is a specialized threat to currants, primarily affecting black currants, and can significantly compromise the health and yield of commercial and home fruit gardens if left unmanaged.
The life cycle of Hyperomyzella is complex and involves host alternation. The aphids overwinter as eggs on the shoots of currant bushes. In the spring, the first generations develop on the currants. As temperatures rise, winged forms migrate to secondary hosts, typically plants from the Asteraceae family, such as lettuces or thistles, before returning to the primary host in the autumn.
Damage to plants is characterized by the distortion, curling, and discoloration of leaves. Feeding causes the development of leaf galls and severe stunting of new growth. As the aphids extract phloem sap, the plant loses essential nutrients, leading to weakened shoots, reduced leaf surface area for photosynthesis, and a general decline in the plant's ability to produce berries.
Infestations are often spotted on the undersides of leaves and on the tips of tender new shoots. Because these aphids reproduce parthenogenetically during the summer months, a small colony can expand rapidly into a massive infestation, causing significant stress to the host plant and potentially facilitating the transmission of plant viruses during the feeding process.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Key strategies include:
- Monitoring bushes during the early growth stages;
- Pruning infested shoots and removing surrounding weed hosts;
- Encouraging natural predators such as ladybirds and lacewings;
- Using systemic or contact insecticides when infestation levels warrant chemical intervention.
