Description
Taxonomic position. The pale currant aphid (Hyperomyzus pallidus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a well-known pest that specifically targets plants within the Ribes genus, primarily blackcurrants, causing significant physiological stress to the host plants.
Host plants. This aphid species primarily infests currant bushes. However, it exhibits a migratory life cycle, often moving to secondary host plants during the summer months. Specifically, various species of sow thistle (Sonchus) serve as essential intermediate hosts where the aphid population persists before returning to shrubs in the autumn.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle is complex, involving overwintering eggs laid on the shoots of currant bushes near the buds. Upon spring hatching, the fundatrices initiate the infestation. Several generations are produced throughout the season, with both wingless and winged forms appearing to facilitate colony expansion and migration to host plants.
Damage and pest status. The aphids feed by piercing and sucking plant sap from young foliage. This activity causes the leaves to curl, blister, and become chlorotic. In severe cases, the entire shoot growth is stunted, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity and a substantial decrease in berry quality and total yield over the season.
Control measures. Integrated pest management for this species involves systemic or contact insecticides applied during the early spring before flowering. Cultural practices are equally important; removing weed hosts, especially sow thistle, from the vicinity of plantations is highly effective. Additionally, promoting biological control agents like ladybirds and lacewings helps maintain aphid populations below the economic injury level.
