Hysteroneura cyperi, commonly known in its context as a cereal or sedge aphid, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is recognized as a significant pest of various agricultural crops, particularly in tropical and subtropical agriculture, where it maintains high activity levels throughout the growing season.

This species primarily targets a wide range of monocotyledonous plants, including rice, wheat, sorghum, and millet, while also colonizing various sedges. Aphids typically aggregate in dense colonies on the undersides of leaves and at the base of stems, where they extract phloem sap, thereby depriving the plant of essential nutrients.

The biology of Hysteroneura cyperi is defined by rapid generation turnover through asexual reproduction. Under optimal temperature and humidity conditions, their population can explode within weeks, leading to significant colonization of host fields. Their ability to migrate between wild grass hosts and cultivated fields makes them highly resilient pests.

Direct damage caused by these insects includes leaf curling, chlorosis, and general plant stunting. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which inhibits photosynthesis. Beyond physical feeding, the pest is a notorious vector for several persistent and non-persistent plant viruses that can devastate entire field yields.

Control and management strategies should include the following:
