The Rusty plum aphid (Hysteroneura setariae) is a member of the family Aphididae, order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that affects both orchard trees and various grass crops across diverse geographic regions.

This species is known for its migratory life cycle, which involves alternating between primary and secondary hosts. Prunus species, specifically plums, serve as the primary host for overwintering and early spring development, while various grasses and cereal crops act as secondary hosts during the summer months.

The biological cycle begins in the spring when eggs hatch on fruit trees. As temperatures rise, winged forms are produced, which migrate to secondary host plants such as sorghum, rice, wheat, and corn. These populations multiply rapidly on the undersides of leaves and stems, extracting plant sap and weakening the host.

The primary damage caused by the Rusty plum aphid involves direct sap depletion, resulting in stunted growth, leaf curling, and chlorosis. Furthermore, the species is a notorious vector for several important plant viruses, such as the Maize Dwarf Mosaic Virus, which causes substantial yield losses in affected fields.
