Systematic position: The mole flea (Lat. Hystrichopsylla talpae) belongs to the order Siphonaptera and the family Hystrichopsyllidae. It is recognized as one of the largest species of fleas, specifically adapted to the environment of subterranean nests.
Crops damaged: It must be noted that Hystrichopsylla talpae is not a phytophagous insect and does not feed on plants. It is an ectoparasite that feeds exclusively on the blood of small mammals, primarily moles and various rodents. It is considered an agricultural pest only in the sense that it inhabits the burrows of animals that cause significant damage to root systems.
Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle follows complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The flea completes its development within the nest materials of its host. The larvae feed on organic debris and flea droppings found in the nest. Once mature, the adults emerge to find hosts, capable of surviving for long periods without a blood meal.
