Stål's leafhopper (Idiocerinus stali) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. As a specialized pest, it primarily targets specific woody plants, utilizing its piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the nutrient-rich sap circulating within the host's vascular system.

The primary host range of this insect includes members of the Salicaceae family, most notably willow (Salix) and poplar (Populus) species.
