Igutettix

Igutettix is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. These small leafhoppers are recognized as significant pests that specifically target and damage viticultural crops, causing physiological stress to the plants.

The primary host for this pest is the grapevine. Adults and nymphs feed predominantly on the underside of the leaves by piercing the epidermis and sucking the plant sap, which directly depletes the plant's essential nutrients and water resources.

The biological cycle of Igutettix comprises eggs, several nymphal stages, and adults. The reproduction rate and developmental speed are highly dependent on the ambient temperature. As they are highly mobile, they can migrate rapidly across vineyard plots once populations reach economic thresholds.

Damage is characterized by the appearance of discolored, chlorotic spots on the leaves, often referred to as stippling. Severe infestations result in leaf curling, premature senescence, and necrosis, which significantly impair the vine's photosynthesis and negatively impact grape yield and sugar content.

Control measures rely on integrated pest management practices. These include the application of selective insecticides during the peak of the nymphal stage, the use of yellow sticky traps for population monitoring, and strict weed control to eliminate alternative hosts that sustain the pest population.
