Description

Systematic position: The tulip tree aphid, scientifically known as Illinoia liriodendri, is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized sap-sucking insect that has evolved to exclusively exploit the resources provided by the tulip tree genus.

Host plants: The primary and exclusive host for this aphid is the tulip tree, Liriodendron tulipifera. It is frequently encountered in nurseries, ornamental landscapes, and arboretums where these specific trees are maintained for their unique foliage and flowers.

Biology and life cycle: The species overwinters as eggs deposited in crevices on the tree bark. Upon the arrival of spring, nymphs emerge and start feeding on developing leaves. Throughout the summer, several overlapping generations are produced, with a mix of apterous (wingless) and alate (winged) forms facilitating colonization of new host tissue.

Damage and pest status: The feeding activity causes significant stress to the host tree, leading to leaf curling, chlorosis, and potential premature senescence. Furthermore, the aphids produce large amounts of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi, coating the leaves in a black layer and reducing the photosynthetic efficiency of the tree.

Protection measures: Management programs should focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Strategies include:

  • Regular monitoring of terminal shoots during spring and summer.
