Illinoia rubicola, commonly known as the raspberry aphid, is a pest species within the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized aphid that thrives on Rubus species, specifically targeting raspberry and blackberry crops, often leading to significant economic losses in berry production.
This aphid species is primarily found colonizing the underside of leaves, succulent stems, and floral buds. By inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the plant tissues, they extract essential sap, which deprives the host plant of nutrients necessary for vigorous growth and fruit development.
The life cycle of Illinoia rubicola involves several generations throughout the growing season. The population density can increase rapidly during warm, dry weather conditions.
