Inopus (specifically Inopus rubriceps, commonly known as the sugarcane soldier fly) is a significant soil-dwelling pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Stratiomyidae. This insect is widely recognized in agronomy for the damage its larvae inflict on the root systems of various agricultural crops, particularly in pasture and cereal-growing regions.

The primary hosts of this pest include sugarcane, maize, wheat, millet, and various forage grasses. The larvae thrive in dense root mats and turf, making established pastures and grassy field margins the most susceptible environments. Due to their subterranean habit, infestations are often detected only after significant plant damage has already occurred.

The life cycle of the insect consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adults, or soldier flies, are harmless in terms of direct feeding, but their role is crucial for mating and distributing eggs across potential host fields. The larval stage is the most destructive; they spend an extended period underground, passing through several instars and feeding on plant roots.

In severe cases, large patches of the crop may die off, leading to significant yield losses and the need for costly field reseeding or renovation of damaged pastures.
