Description
The Scarce swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) is a butterfly species belonging to the family Papilionidae (swallowtails). While known for its striking appearance and role as a pollinator, its larval stage (caterpillar) acts as a foliage feeder on several fruit-bearing tree species.
This pest mainly targets trees within the Rosaceae family. Primary hosts include apple, pear, plum, peach, cherry, and almond trees. In some landscapes, the larvae may also be found on hawthorn or sloe bushes located near orchards.
The life cycle typically involves one or two generations per year depending on the climate. The species overwinters as a chrysalis attached to the host tree's twigs. Adult butterflies emerge in the spring, mating and laying eggs individually on the leaves of the target trees.
The damage is primarily caused by the feeding larvae. Early-stage caterpillars create small holes in the leaf blades, while larger instars consume significant amounts of leaf tissue, often leaving only the midrib. Severe defoliation can weaken trees, particularly young saplings, and affect overall tree vigor.
