Description
The poplar moth (Ipimorpha subtusa) is a member of the Noctuidae family, known as a specific pest targeting poplar and aspen species. These moths are nocturnal insects, and their larvae are well-adapted to surviving within the foliage of host trees, where they create specialized microhabitats for feeding and development.
The life cycle of this pest typically begins with overwintering eggs laid on the bark of twigs. As spring buds start to swell, the larvae hatch and immediately begin feeding. This timing allows them to exploit the most nutritious parts of the tree, such as young developing leaves and buds, before moving on to mature foliage during the summer months.
Larval damage is highly characteristic due to the insect's leaf-rolling habit. The caterpillars use silk to bind leaf edges together, forming a protective tube or shelter. From within these rolls, they skeletonize the leaf tissue, which eventually causes the leaves to brown and wither, significantly impacting the aesthetic and physiological health of the tree.
While the poplar moth rarely kills mature trees outright, high-density infestations can cause significant stress. This is particularly concerning in ornamental landscapes, municipal parks, or commercial poplar plantations where tree vitality and growth rates are of economic importance. Excessive defoliation can lead to a reduction in annual growth increments.
