Ischnopterapion virens, commonly referred to as the clover seed weevil, is a small beetle belonging to the Apionidae family within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a primary pest in forage legume production, specifically targeting clover species across various agricultural regions.

The host range is primarily limited to clover (Trifolium), including red clover. While adult beetles cause foliage damage, the most severe economic impact occurs during the reproductive stage of the plant, as the larvae target the developing seeds within the flower heads.

The biological cycle involves overwintering as adults in soil or debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the weevils emerge and move to young clover stands. They consume leaves before moving to the floral structures to lay eggs, placing them directly into the developing seed pods for larval development.

Damage is characterized by larvae feeding inside the seeds, rendering them empty or shriveled. This feeding activity leads to a significant decrease in seed weight and germination capacity, which directly compromises the quality of the harvested seed lot for subsequent planting seasons.

Effective management strategies require a combination of cultural and chemical tactics. Key approaches include maintaining spatial isolation from older clover fields to reduce migration, selecting cultivars with uniform flowering times, and applying targeted insecticides during the bud stage to suppress adult populations before significant oviposition occurs.
