Springtails, specifically those from the genus Isotoma, are tiny hexapods belonging to the subclass Collembola. Often found in moist, organic-rich environments, they are common inhabitants of potting soil and greenhouses. While generally considered beneficial decomposers, they can become significant agricultural pests under specific environmental conditions.
From a systematic perspective, Isotoma are classified within the class Entognatha. Their bodies are adapted to damp habitats, and they possess a specialized jumping organ called a furcula. This morphological feature allows them to move rapidly between soil particles, making them difficult to manage without targeted interventions in intensive plant production.
