The New York weevil, scientifically identified as Ithycerus noveboracensis, is a unique beetle belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Ithyceridae. Despite its common name, it is a native North American insect that holds a significant place in entomological studies due to its primitive evolutionary characteristics. It is considered a serious pest in both natural forests and managed landscapes.

This beetle targets a variety of hardwood trees, showing a strong preference for members of the oak (Quercus) and hickory (Carya) families. It also affects beech, linden, and occasionally fruit trees such as apple and cherry. In nursery settings, the New York weevil can be particularly devastating, as its feeding habits on young twigs and buds can stunt growth and compromise the structural integrity of young saplings.

The life cycle of the New York weevil involves a complete metamorphosis. Adults emerge in the spring, typically coinciding with the bud break of host trees. They feed on the succulent tissues of new shoots and buds. After mating, females create small cavities in the bark or twigs to lay their eggs. The larval stage, which feeds on the cambium and roots of the trees, is the most destructive phase, often remaining hidden until significant damage has occurred.
