Ixoreus

Ixoreus is a genus of insects belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (weevils). These insects are recognized as specialized plant pests capable of significantly reducing the yield of specific agricultural and ornamental crops within their natural range of distribution.

This pest primarily targets woody plants and shrubs, feeding on soft tissues, developing buds, and young shoots. The most severe damage is typically recorded in commercial nurseries and young orchards, where the insect's activity impairs the structural development of the plant and compromises its overall health and resilience.

The life cycle of Ixoreus follows a complete metamorphosis, typical of the weevil family, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The adults overwinter in the upper soil layers or under leaf litter, emerging in early spring. Females deposit eggs into holes bored into plant tissues, ensuring the larvae have immediate access to food upon hatching.

The damage caused by this pest is characterized by distinctive feeding scars on leaves, wilting of terminal buds, and the deformation of young stems. Furthermore, the larvae can tunnel into the root collar or stem interior, disrupting vascular flow and often leading to the death of the plant if the infestation levels are sufficiently high.

Management and control strategies involve a combination of agrotechnical and chemical measures. Essential practices include crop rotation and the thorough removal of plant debris where adults may overwinter. During outbreaks, the application of systemic or contact insecticides is recommended, specifically timed to coincide with the periods of peak larval and adult feeding activity.
