The genus Jaera belongs to the order Isopoda, family Janiridae. While these organisms are typically associated with marine and brackish water ecosystems, when introduced into artificial water systems or coastal agricultural zones, they can exhibit activity that negatively affects cultivated plants.

These organisms primarily damage aquatic crops, algae, and the roots of plants grown in hydroponics or waterlogged soils. Jaera mainly feeds on organic debris, but when population density is high, it can shift to living tissues of young shoots, weakening the root system and causing general stunting of the plant.

The biology of Jaera is closely linked to the aquatic environment. They are small crustaceans with high adaptive potential to changes in salinity and temperature. The life cycle involves several molting stages, and reproduction occurs year-round under favorable conditions, which complicates the monitoring of population numbers.

Damage symptoms manifest as mechanical injury to the epidermis of roots and stems, creating entry points for secondary infections, including fungal and bacterial diseases. The harmful impact is expressed in reduced growth rates, yellowing of leaves, and potential root system necrosis during mass colonization of the substrate.

Control measures include strict monitoring of water quality in hydroponic systems and substrate sterilization prior to planting. It is recommended to use filtration systems that prevent the entry of crustaceans into closed-loop irrigation systems. In case of severe infestation, specialized system disinfection methods are used, avoiding the application of toxic chemicals that may be harmful to the crop itself.
