The elm gall midge (Janetiella ulmii) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. It is a specialized herbivore that induces the formation of galls on the leaves of elm trees (Ulmus species), creating a protected environment for its larval development.
This pest primarily infests various elm species, including both native and ornamental varieties. While established mature trees can tolerate some infestation, severe outbreaks can significantly impact the health of nursery stock, street trees, and urban plantings by reducing leaf area and photosynthetic capacity.
The life cycle of Janetiella ulmii is closely synchronized with the phenology of its host plant. Adult females emerge in early spring and deposit eggs on developing leaves. Once the larvae emerge, they begin feeding on the leaf tissue, which triggers the formation of a gall around them. These galls provide the larvae with both nutrients and protection from environmental factors and natural predators.
Symptoms of infestation are characterized by the presence of numerous small, round, or pustule-like galls on the surface of elm leaves. In heavy infestations, the leaf tissue may become distorted, leading to chlorosis and premature senescence of the foliage. This damage can stress the tree and, over several seasons, may contribute to overall crown thinning.
Effective management requires a combination of strategies. Cultural practices are paramount, including the removal and destruction of fallen leaves where the pest may overwinter as pupae. Chemical control should be timed precisely to target the larvae during their emergence before they successfully initiate gall formation, utilizing systemic insecticides when necessary for highly valuable trees.
