Description

Kakimia is a genus of aphids belonging to the family Aphididae (order Hemiptera). These small, sap-sucking insects are specialized herbivores known for targeting specific host plants, primarily within the Grossulariaceae family, making them a notable concern for berry growers and fruit tree nursery managers.

The primary crops affected by this pest include various species of currants (Ribes) and gooseberries. These aphids prefer the tender, succulent tissues of growing shoot tips, where they can rapidly establish dense populations, directly competing with the plant for essential nutrients and photosynthates.

The life cycle of Kakimia is typical of many aphid species, involving both sexual and asexual reproduction phases. They overwinter in the egg stage on the bark or near the buds of host plants. When temperatures rise in the spring, the eggs hatch into fundatrices, which initiate rapid population growth as the plant enters its active growing season.

Damage caused by Kakimia is visually distinct, characterized by severe curling, twisting, and yellowing of the young leaves at the tips of shoots. The removal of plant sap by massive colonies causes leaf chlorosis, stunted shoot development, and, in severe cases, the death of young tissue, significantly reducing the overall yield potential of the infected bush.
