The elm gall aphid (Kaltenbachiella) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. This insect is primarily known for inducing the development of galls on the foliage of elm trees (Ulmus species), making it a notable pest in both forestry and ornamental urban plantings.
This pest specifically targets elm trees, feeding on the phloem sap of leaves. The feeding activity triggers a physiological response in the plant, resulting in the formation of hollow leaf galls. These structures serve as protected chambers where the aphids feed, reproduce, and remain shielded from predators and environmental stressors.
