The elm gall aphid (Kaltenbachiella japonica) is an insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized herbivore known for inducing the formation of characteristic galls on the leaves of its host plants, which serve as protective habitats for the aphid colonies.

The primary hosts for this species are trees belonging to the genus Ulmus. The pest inflicts damage by sucking plant sap, which causes systemic physiological stress to the tree, resulting in stunted growth and diminished vitality throughout the growing season.

The life cycle of the elm gall aphid involves complex generational changes. In early spring, stem mothers hatch from overwintered eggs and settle on developing leaf tissue. Their feeding activities stimulate the plant to grow abnormal tissue, effectively encapsulating the aphids within a gall structure where subsequent generations mature.
