Elm gall aphid

The elm gall aphid (Kaltenbachiella nirecola) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Aphididae family. It specifically targets elm trees, inducing the formation of characteristic leaf galls that serve as a habitat for successive generations of the pest throughout the spring and early summer.

The life cycle begins with overwintering eggs deposited in the bark crevices of host trees. As spring temperatures rise and buds burst, the founder aphids emerge and initiate the formation of galls by feeding on the leaf tissue, which triggers a physiological response in the tree, creating the protective structure.

Damage symptoms appear as distinct leaf galls, often appearing as ridges or leaf folds. Inside these structures, the aphid population is well-protected from external environmental factors and predators. The feeding process distorts the leaves and causes substantial stress to the host tree's foliage system.

The economic and ecological impact of Kaltenbachiella nirecola is largely observed in urban landscapes and nurseries. Heavy infestations result in early leaf senescence, reduced tree vigor, and significant aesthetic degradation, which requires professional intervention to maintain the health of valuable urban elm populations.
