Elm gall aphid

The elm gall aphid (Kaltenbachiella pallida) is a small insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a highly specialized pest that targets elm trees (Ulmus). Its primary activity involves feeding on plant sap and inducing the formation of specific galls on the leaves, which serve as protective habitats for the aphid colonies throughout the growing season.

The host range of Kaltenbachiella pallida is strictly limited to elm species. By causing structural changes in the leaf tissue, the aphid creates a self-sustaining environment that shields it from predators and environmental stressors. This adaptation presents a significant challenge for arborists and gardeners attempting to control the pest once the galls have already fully formed and hardened.

The biological cycle of this pest is synchronized with the phenology of the elm tree. Overwintering eggs hatch in early spring, and the fundatrices (stem mothers) initiate the gall formation process on the newly emerging foliage. Successive generations are produced within these galls, where they feed continuously on the nutrient-rich sap, causing localized damage to the leaf structure.

Symptoms of infestation are easily identified by the presence of raised, distorted leaf tissue or pocket-like galls on the upper side of the leaves. Heavy infestations often result in reduced photosynthetic efficiency, yellowing of the leaves, and premature leaf drop. While generally not lethal, severe yearly attacks can significantly weaken the overall vitality of the affected trees.

Effective management and control measures include:

• Application of dormant oil or systemic insecticides in early spring before gall formation begins.
• Physical removal and destruction of heavily infested leaves if the population density is low.
• Promoting a healthy environment for natural predators such as ladybirds, lacewings, and parasitic wasps.
• Selecting resistant elm cultivars for new landscape plantings to reduce susceptibility to aphid colonization.
